Californians Reveal The Inside Scoop On Their Favorite Ice Cream In Honor Of National Ice Cream Month

Mint Chocolate Chip Voted Flavor of Choice across Five California Cities

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., & MODESTO, Calif. – July 17, 2009 – In honor of National Ice Cream month this July, the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB), polled residents in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Fresno to dish about their favorite ice cream flavor. True to the Golden State’s eclectic image, Californian’s voted Mint Chocolate Chip as their “all-time” favorite flavor for the ice cream’s rich and indulgent chocolate chunks and refreshing minty appeal.

Forget basic vanilla or chocolate – it’s all about variety for California ice cream enthusiasts. The other two favorites were the colorful Neapolitan ice cream with layers of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla, and the quirky Rocky Road ice cream loaded with almonds and soft marshmallow in smooth chocolate ice cream.

The average American eats 25 pints of ice cream annually, and California is the number-one producer of both ice cream and milk in the U.S. It takes approximately 12 pounds of whole milk to produce one gallon of ice cream, and in 2008, the state produced 133 million gallons of ice cream. In 1984, Americans' love for ice cream was officially recognized when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream month.

Californian’s were clear on their favorite ice cream flavor, but the poll showed a near even split among the preference for consuming ice cream. Fifty-seven percent of people preferred ice cream in a cup, while forty-three voted for the iconic cone as their favorite way to enjoy a sweet treat.

The CMAB’s survey noted the majority of Californian’s voted Baskin-Robbins as their favorite place to grab a scoop on-the-go, and all 510 retail locations across California exclusively use Real California Milk in their ice cream.

“July is National Ice Cream month, and the California Milk Advisory Board surveyed Californians’ ice cream preferences to recognize this summertime staple that’s also a big part of California’s dairy industry,” said Carissa Tourtelot, Communications Consultant, CMAB. “Whether your ice cream preferences align with the majority of Californians or you prefer a different scoop all together, the CMAB has developed ice cream recipes featuring local, California dairy products to sweeten up your summer.”

For more ice cream fun this summer, try making a California themed treat like the “Southern California Surfer Split Sundae” made with blueberry syrup reminiscent of ocean waves and shredded coconut and banana halves as pseudo surfboards. Or take a trip through California’s history with the “Gold Rush Sundae” made with rich toffee ice cream, butterscotch sauce, and peanut brittle.

Southern California Surfer Split Sundae

In small bowl, combine blueberry jam with water to thin; set aside. In banana split dish, spread whipped cream and drizzle with blueberry sauce. Place banana halves on the whipped cream and blueberry sauce. Top bananas with three scoops of chocolate ice cream and sprinkle with shredded coconut. Garnish each scoop of ice cream with a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry.

Gold Rush Sundae

Place chocolate chip cookie on a large plate and top with 3 scoops of toffee ice cream. Drizzle ice cream with butterscotch sauce, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with crushed peanut brittle
